"I built this stack for the 18-hour layover in Ramstein, the tent in the green zone, the VA waiting room that never moves fast enough. These five fit in any cargo pocket and they'll outlast the deployment."

"Every quarter I pull a theme — homecoming, leadership under fire, what we carry home — and build a box around it. This quarter: books about the first year back. The ones nobody warns you about."

Our Story
A narrow-aisled shop
run by people who've been there.
Foxhole started as a milk crate of paperbacks outside a VSO office. Fourteen years later it's a full shop with fourteen veteran staff members, a coffee bar, and a book club that's had 97 consecutive months of live author calls.
We don't sell books. We match people with books. There's a difference, and you feel it the moment you walk in.

Staff Picks
Every recommendation comes with a two-sentence review in the staff member's own handwriting — and their name, rank, and branch. Because accountability matters here too.

The Operator
Robert O'Neill
"Read it on my last deployment. O'Neill doesn't glorify — he accounts. You'll understand why some men can't stop being operators even after they're home."
— Darnell K., Petty Officer 1st Class, USN (Ret.)

Once an Eagle
Anton Myrer
"Required reading at West Point for a reason. Sam Damon is who you want to be. Courtney Massengale is who you're afraid you've become. Read it and know the difference."
— Guadalupe R., 1st Sgt, U.S. Army (Ret.)

Chickenhawk
Robert Mason
"Vietnam through a Huey pilot's windshield. The flying sequences are technically perfect. The homecoming chapter broke me. Every aviator needs this on their shelf."
— Tomasz W., CW4 Aviation, U.S. Army (Ret.)
In the Kingdom of Ice
Hampton Sides
"Not military, but it's about a crew that refuses to quit. The USS Jeannette disaster and the men who survived it by sheer stubbornness. You'll recognize the unit cohesion immediately."
— Amara S., Corporal, USMC (Ret.)

What a book becomes
in the right hands.
"My son PCS'd to Okinawa and I didn't know what to send him. The Rucksack bundle arrived in two days. He called me after finishing The Things They Carried. First real conversation we'd had in months."
Deborah Osei
Military Mom, Clarksville, TN
"I walked in for coffee. I left with six books I didn't know existed. The staff member — Sergeant Rivera — spent twenty minutes with me. That doesn't happen at Barnes & Noble."
Kyle Tran
Civilian Reader, Nashville, TN
"The Footlocker subscription is how I stay connected to the community during the school year. Every box feels like someone who understands sent it specifically for me.Like someone who understands sent it specifically for me."
